The Human General from Isles of Mer
History
Ancient tales of exploration weave narratives about the enchanting women from the islands, whose melodic voices have the power to captivate sailors. Despite possessing gills on the back of their ears, these Merfolk are considered alluring to other human types. Their exceptional swimming abilities naturally positioned them as masterful fishermen, adept harborers, and skilled shipbuilders. The naval port on the Ealo Isle stands as a monumental testament to the might of the Merfolk’s navy.
Their culture, marked by simplicity and straightforward thinking, revolves around fair trade, instilled by the mutual reliance of four islands. The absence of a king for nearly two centuries led to a people’s revolt, birthing a senate to govern. Elected officials from noble houses, representing various island regions, convene several times a year on the Crown Isle at the capital city, Trenton. Rival noble families vie for senate seats, ensuring a dynamic balance of power that prevents any single person from dominating.
In a notable exception, King Loymne circumvented the Merfolk’s formidable navy with his flying castles and gryphon riders, laying siege to Trenton. The islands, historically shielded by the sea, had no means to thwart an aerial assault. Surrendering within a day, the senate pledged fealty to King Loymne, allowing them to retain their positions. Thus, to this day, the islands are governed by a senate under the rule of King Loymne.
